hello clouds (is this too simple of a collective noun for us?), i was wondering how your weekend has been. i didn't get to be as active as i'd like these past two days since i was traveling.
on saturday, i went to new york to watch the swedish boy band drain gang. it was a very specific type of vibe and generally pleasurable; i admire the type of levity it takes to enjoy this music. they played peroxide and i melted my face off. we were so far back that i couldn't really see the stage –– but the energy was immense and i had a fun time.
this was the first show we stayed overnight in new york for... normally i do a grueling 1/2am commute back to new haven. we walked home at midnight, stayed in a 3rd floor airbnb where you could still hear street chatter and life until 4am. the next day we went on a very touristry (derogatory to myself) trip around brooklyn checking out record stores, thrift shops, flea markets, and eating very good food.
here's a bit of my haul. i am excited to rip the CDs; though i found out my player is broken and am only relying on my external reader and have to play it off my laptop which is less cool than having a dedicated player. i love being a pirate and ripping things. even if others have ripped them already too. i also scan the liner notes and all, of course.
i always, always frequent whatever local record stores are present in any place i visit, just browsing through. recently, i've started actually *talking* with the workers. this is new to me as i am not a very chatty person... but they obviously are the only other people i know who are as into this medium as i am. the kind lady at the small record stall brought out a bin of experimental releases for me that was tucked away into the corner after she excitedly heard that i was into that kind of music.
it looks like there are a lot of warren ng projects and what i'm most excited about: some cds from the free 103point9 transmission arts project. the print on the disc is gorgeous... the inner record sleeve reads "radio action is a seasonal release of commissioned sound works using radio transmissions as an instrument or theme." i love sound art. check out this wonderful archive connected to it: wavefarm.org/ta/archive/artists
i also got danez smith' homie collection, a wildlife encyclopedia, and a vintage map of the pacific ocean. i had a good conversation with the vendor about data visualization principles and tactics in old maps vs online maps.
the encyclopedia is the same price as that spiced chai. cruel!
how about you?
